Self striping Yarns

I really love self striping yarns. In the eighties I used to knit lots of striped socks and sweaters - and did have to weave in millions of ends. So the invention of self striping yarns seemed a welcome revolution to me. All yarns have a special pattern repeat. What can be done to bring out all possibilities and all beauty of self striping yarns -  look here for some answers.

Bert Price: 5 $

"Bert" is a special scarf, that my garndmother used to knit for the whole family. There is no tieing, no big knot underneath your chin while wearing it, no loose hanging ends to disturb you – just great.

Karlchen FREE

Do you know the feeling of starting a cap from a ball of leftovers and running out of yarn before the crown is finished? I do. As a result I designed “Karlchen” (German for “Charly”), a one ball cap knitted from the top downwards.

If you are running out of yarn – just come to an end. Knit the ribbing and bind off. It doesn’t really matter if the cap is an inch shorter – as long as you start at the crown!

The pattern is suitable for many different yarns; it explains the basic formula for a top - down cap.

I published this pattern last year in my German blog for free. Here is the translation.

Finished Size(s): from baby to adult XL
Skill Level: Intermediate
Yarn Used:
most yarns, examples knitted in Noro Kureyon (1 ball) and Lang Tosca (1 ball)

Connie Price: 3 $

I love self striping yarns and I like to keep my ears warm. It’s that simple.

The first idea was to give the colors and stripes of Noro Kureyon room to show their brightness – and that could be done best in a beret with it’s relatively large and flat surface.

Choosing a wheel shaped crown brings some straight lines and life into the coloring.

For a while now I have been in love with mosaic patterns.
If you combine a solid colour yarn with a self striping yarn the effect is tremendous. My intention was to create a mosaic or slip stitch pattern that is suitable for a scarf – giving you a scarf which looks alike on both sides, using only one colour per row and displaying the brightness of the yarns.

The mosaic pattern this scarf uses is easy to knit –  just give it a try.

Finished Size(s): One
Skill Level: beginner
Yarn Used:
One ball Noro Kureyon and one ball Alafoss Lettlopi OR one ball Noro SilkGarden and one ball Gedifra Cashmerino.
